If You Can’t Take the Heat, Turn it Into a Kitchen

What is it about historic D.C. firehouses that spark culinary ambition? A pair of in-the-works restaurants aim to address this burning question. As Express recently reported, a pre-World War II firehouse in the Bloomingdale neighborhood is slated to become an eatery called EC-12, whose name references the old Engine Company 12 that used to occupy the building. Architects are currently working on building plans, after which developers will be able to apply for a building…

Morning Roundup: We’d Like to Dedicate This Edition

Local corporate darlings XM Satellite Radio announced yesterday that their first quarter revenues were up over 100 percent compared to last year, but the company’s stock fell over 5 percent on Thursday, as the company revealed it was under investigation by the FTC based on, according to the Washington Business Journal, “its marketing and telemarketing activities, billing practices and customer complaints.” Any XM subscribers in the DCist audience? Have you been getting harrassed recently?…

Renaming the District’s Neighborhoods (Updated)

We didn’t mean to, but it seems that we set off an interesting discussion about new names for the city’s neighborhoods. As we mentioned this morning, real estate prices in NoMa are fast rising. For those of you unaware of a neighborhood called “NoMa” within the District, it’s a large swath of land north of Massachusetts Avenue and east of North Capitol Street, fanning out from Union Station and encompassing a once industrial wasteland that…

Morning Roundup: Hitchhiking to Work Edition

We spend plenty of time complaining about the state of the region’s public transit network, be it delays on Metrorail, unpredictable arrival times for Metrobuses, or just too much traffic along area roadways. But at least we don’t have to hitchhike to work. Today the Post features an entertaining feature on John Schindel, a Stafford County man whose decade-old DUI conviction has left him at the mercy of fellow motorists to get him to and…

Ron & Fez out, Peter Rosenberg In, Don Back

To confirm a story that broke on DCRTV last week (side request to Dave Hughes: can you re-do your page to allow permalinking?), yesterday XM Satellite Radio announced that beginning September 12th, former WJFK radio personalities Ron & Fez will begin broadcasting middays on XM’s High Voltage. Bennington and Whatley will be following long time friends and former WNEW cohorts Opie & Anthony, who were fired from the New York “Hot Talk” station after their…

Previously on DCist

This DCist is in the process of moving to a new apartment, but we couldn’t help but bring our camera along with us when we were running errands, including a quick stop at the Soviet Giant near the National Cathedral. (Next to the grocery store is the abandoned G.C. Murphy, where we took this photo.) Through sleet, rain, snow and high water, the blogging never stops. — The anarchists defend their actions. — She’s…

DCist Interview: Bob Edwards

(Interview done by DCist contributor Amadie Hart) Many fans mourned when the venerable Bob Edwards was demoted from his long-running National Public Radio gig as the host of “Morning Edition.” But never fear — the voice that drew so many listeners has been hosting his own show on XM radio since October. He sits down with DCist to talk about his satellite radio experience and his book, “Edward R. Murrow and the Birth of Broadcast…

Bob Edwards to Compete Against NPR

National Public Radio’s beloved deposed elder statesman, Bob Edwards, has a new assignment. Edwards will leave NPR to compete against his old radio show, “Morning Edition” on XM Satellite Radio starting in October. Edwards tells the Post the he will “be a pioneer again,” much like when he joined NPR in 1974 when the radio network was just three years old. Edwards has always seemed to be at the forefront of D.C. commercial development. For…
