Behind The Zebra Escape Is An Exotic Animal Breeding Business With Dozens Of Animal Welfare Violations
The escape of three zebras from a Md. farm in late August has captivated the region, but the person at the center of it all — exotic animal breeder Jerry Holly — has remained an enigma.
The deceased zebra was discovered in a snare trap in mid-September, according to the Maryland Natural Resources Police.
“Human error” led to a Grevy’s zebra biting and seriously injuring a National Zoo keeper last month.
Despite what some cyclists have observed, an initial study by the District Department of Transportation shows that illegal U-Turns are “way down” on a block of Pennsylvania Avenue NW where safety bumps called “zebras” have been installed.
Jim Sebastian, DDOT’s bicycle program coordinator, explained that the zebras were spaced “based on the existing pavement markings, i.e. centered between the stripes in the buffer zone. This was mainly for aesthetic reasons. Aesthetics have been an important part of the Pennsylvania Avenue bike lanes since the beginning.”
