Photo by Nivad.Living in one of the “bloggiest” cities in the world has its advantages, none more useful than the hyper-local, real time database of what’s happening everywhere here. Washington’s local documentarians bring to bear intriguing stories, pertinent social information, and, sometimes, change.
Of course, some crap finds its way into the mix every now and then. Like drunkengeorgetownstudents.com. Stephen R. Brown, the proprietor of said website, has over the past few days: posted uncensored photos of drunk Georgetown students to a website hosted on the school’s servers, got booted from those servers for violating the terms of service, moved operations to an independent blog and penned a nearly unreadable post on the drama, and blamed “predatory landlords” for students’ drinking culture. Brown was profiled in the Post and proceeded to blast that profile’s author, Jenna Johnson, for enabling the “alcohol fascisti [to] win the day” before claiming that his Burleith neighborhood will be “overrun by drunken students this weekend” and warning residents to “just run for your life.”
Alright then. Somewhere in that muck, it’s clear enough that Brown wants to make a salient point about the dangers of alcohol abuse on college campuses. But if Johnson’s story is any indication, Brown’s cranky website might actually be doing more to mobilize undergrads to imbibe than to discourage them. Or as they say in the blogs: Mr. Brown, you’re doing it wrong.
