Photo by architeuthis dux.Good morning, Washington. Looks like we’ve got be another two days of oppressive heat and humidity coming our way this weekend. But who am I kidding? All the (literally) cool kids will be inside in front of a television, soaking up the A/C and a pint or four as the United States men’s national soccer team tries to ride its fortune to a victory over Ghana this afternoon. But hey, for those of you who are venturing outdoors — maybe to check out the Smithsonian Folklife Festival or the always-fun Caribbean Carnival — allow us to take a cop a mantra from the D.C. Fire and EMS twitter account: hydrate, hydrate, hydrate.
>> Starting tonight, drivers in the District looking to park in “premium demand zones” — roughly speaking: Adams Morgan, Georgetown Historic District, Penn Quarter/Chinatown, U Street, NW Corridor, Downtown Central Business District, Maine and Water Streets SW, The National Mall and Wisconsin Avenue NW between Van Ness Street and Western Avenue — can now do so for as long as they’d like, rather than the conventional 6:30 p.m. Of course, you’ll still need to pay until 10:30.
>> Speaking of driving, I’m at a loss as to how anyone can read the lede of this WaPo story on the cash-cow speeding camera on New York Avenue at Bladensburg Road and not feel like there needs to be enhanced enforcement there.
>> The Silver Spring Historical Society will be opening a time capsule this afternoon. What’s inside? (Smart money’s probably on a blueprint for a parking garage.)
