It’s a well-known fact that the District is looking at a $300 million backlog of unpaid parking tickets. What may surprise you is that at least $15,000 of that figure comes courtesy of members of Congress, who, Roll Call reports, have been dodging paying citations for some time.
Even though Congresspeople enjoy the same curb parking exemption that D.C. Councilmembers do, Roll Call reporter Jennifer Yachnin figured out who hadn’t paid their rush hour parking, loading zone and fire hydrant violations by performing some old-fashioned detective work:
According to a Roll Call survey of vehicles parked on Capitol Hill and at Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport, as of mid-March, lawmakers were carrying at least $15,000 in outstanding tickets — ranging from expired meters to speeding camera violations — and potentially thousands of dollars more.
Three-quarters of those tickets, worth about $11,500, were in default at the time of the survey, having gone more than 60 days, and in some cases years, without payment.
Among the notable offenders? Rep. Anthony Weiner (D-NY), who paid his tickets after being contacted by Roll Call about the story. (Weiner apparently wants to make a run at the New York mayor’s office in 2013, so he probably wanted to get back to more pressing issues, like hating bike lanes.)
So what’s Mayor Gray got to say about the congressional scofflaws, especially in such a lean time for the city? “I am a bit surprised,” Gray told WUSA9. “We wish they would pay up because we can use the revenue.”
Sigh, don’t strain yourself too hard there, Mr. Mayor.
