Budget cuts, higher taxes, April 15: taxes have been on the brain for area residents. However, who actually pays the most in taxes in the D.C. metro region? You might think it’s the District with that painful 8.5 percent income tax – but you’d be wrong. Residents of Prince George’s County pay, on average, the most taxes in the area.

The Washington Examiner broke down likely taxable expenses for the region, finding that Maryland suburban residents pay the highest amount to dear old Uncle Sam. Meanwhile, those in Virginia counties – Arlington and Fairfax – pay the least taxes on average. D.C. residents come in the middle, paying a bit less than Prince George’s County and Montgomery County residents but a bit more than Arlington and Fairfax residents.
