During a marathon session last night, the University of Maryland’s Student Government Association granted WMUC an additional $6,000 in funds, only to revoke the money hours later due to a $20,000 miscalculation.
Only five of the 13 student groups who had requested funding from student activity fees left the basement of Anne Arundel Hall with success. The most controversial decision, however, was the $42,793 in monies that was channeled to MaryPIRG in order to fund the salaries of two non-student employees.
The beleaguered campus radio station, which initially received a paltry $7,000 in funding from the SGA earlier this week, appealed the student government’s decision to receive more funds in order to pay for vital costs such as Internet bills and FCC licenses to keep the station afloat. The station is now in jeopardy of shutting down, as it requires at least twice of what was originally granted by the SGA.
The station will ultimately have to rely on donations in order to keep the station broadcasting over terrestrial and Internet airwaves. Donations can be made via the WMUC Support Fund.
