Nope, he didn’t take the plunge.

Despite all the hand-wringing and protestations, The One City Cannonball did not come to fruition. Following the same play book as his predecessor, Mayor Gray decided to stay on dry land during the official opening ceremony of DPR’s outdoor pools yesterday — though today is first day pools are open to the public — at Barry Park in SE, opting to make a few comments commemorating the occasion. Instead, D.C. Recreation Director Jesus Aguirre fell in for Gray. WAMU was on site to take a video of the cannonball.

Some say the tamped down mood could have been a result of the weight of scandals and political unrest encumbering the shoulders of the mayor’s office. Though, more importantly, the gesture of dipping even a big toe in the shallow end would have been a reinforcing statement to residents to leave city fire hydrants alone.
