Photo by philliefan99.Good news for weekend Metro riders: the transit agency is no longer planning to increase headways between weekend trains in order to save money in its next budget.
To help bridge a $66 million gap deficit in its 2012 budget, WMATA had proposed increasing the amount of time between trains to as long as 25 minutes on Saturdays and Sundays. Spacing out trains in that way would have saved the agency approximately $7 million, but public backlash against the proposal was swift and nearly universal. The Post reports that WMATA will cover the deficit with increased subsidies from the District, Maryland and Virginia.
The budget was presented to board members this morning, where it was also revealed that the agency is no longer proposing the elimination of the E6 bus line, as had been initially suggested.
