Photo by Matt.Dunn.Last Friday, the District’s Office of Campaign Finance filed a complaint against D.C. Council Chairman Kwame Brown, finding that Brown’s 2008 campaign failed to report hundreds of contributions totaling in the six figures. But could Brown also be facing criminal charges as a result?
Alan Suderman and Freeman Klopott both say that could be the case. In addition to calling for fines against Brown, OCF’s complaint features “a criminal component,” but depends on the city’s Board of Elections and Ethics to move the investigation to the U.S. Attorney’s Office for review. “We just thought that further action might be warranted outside the imposition of fines,” OCF spokesman Wesley Williams told Suderman yesterday. Neither Brown, nor his counsel, responded to requests for comment.
The complaint finds that Bronw failed to report more than $300,000 in campaign contributions and expenses, including questions about money which was funneled through Brown’s campaign staff and his brother Che to various entities with business in front of the city government.
