Good morning, Washington. A good amount of news on the horizon today, so we’ll give you a little teaser — a gay rights pioneer passed away yesterday, campaign finance reports are out, the District breaks ground on a massive infrastructure project and we tell you were you can get your early-morning Sunday Bloody Mary fix. That, and Andy Rooney. Stay tuned.
D.C. Hopes for More From New Department: District officials are hoping that the newly created Department of General Services will help streamline capital construction projects and maintenance duties for the city, reports The Washington Times. The department, which merged the Department of Real Estate Services, Office of Public Education Facilities Modernization and other construction- and real estate-related city agencies, came into existence as part of the 2012 Fiscal Year, and has a budget of $354 million. City officials hope that its consolidated functions will help cut costs and streamline operations, but some members of the D.C. Council have expressed concern that it may not be able to transition smoothly into the new role and that it could remain too top-heavy.
Alexandria Votes to Join Bikeshare: The City Council of Alexandria voted unanimously yesterday to join Capital Bikeshare, pledging to install 54 bikes at six stations in the coming months. According to WTOP, the stations and bikes, which will cost $400,000, will be located throughout the city, and spots in Del Ray, Van Dorn and the West End are being considered. District officials also announced recently that in 2012 the city will be adding 50 more stations and 500 more bikes; the system currently has 1,100 bikes at 100 stations in D.C. and Arlington.
It’s Official — Call It the Silver Line: The Examiner reports that Metro officials are finally calling the Metro line to Dulles the Silver Line, adopting a longstanding nickname for the extension. The new 23-mile line, which will cost $6 billion to complete, is also slated to incur an additional $107 million over the next three years in costs to hire train operators, clean stations and fix escalators.
Add One More To The List: Last month we listed the most ridiculous ways that people have smuggled drugs into Dulles Airport. Add this: bedknobs.
Briefly Noted: Beltsville man killed in hit-and-run … Western Maryland wants little to do with Montgomery County … Gwen Ifill to moderate MLK Memorial dedication ceremony … Virginia Gov. Bob McDonnell remains popular, while new tolls don’t … Gray critic sides with mayor on grass-cutting contract.
This Day in DCist: On this day in 2010, students at Hardy Middle School were asked some pretty direct questions about sex and sexuality and burger joint Rogue States lost a legal battle, forcing it to close. In 2009, HRC was forced to clean up graffiti left by radical queers and for one Virginia family, public transit seemed like quite the novelty.
