Today, on the 12th anniversary of September 11, the National Mall turned into a circus of protests.

At the center was the Million American March Against Fear, better known as the Million Muslim March, a sparsely attended rally that was part peace rally, part 9/11 truther platform with a dash of activist Cornel West. One speaker, Ruby Al-sous, began her speech by responding to a man screaming, “No Sharia law!” (Yelling at the speakers was a regular occurrence.)

“No Sharia law,” she said, before exclaiming, “Look at how [the media] have divided us!”

“We want to be united in courage.”

Several speakers used the term “false flag.” Another speaker claimed that there aren’t chemical weapons in Syria.

West’s speech was the most neutral of the day, promoting a message for unity (he believes in Jesus, but wants to work with atheists) and against drones and war with Syria. He said the quantity of the people at the March did not bother him, but rather he was concerned with the quality.

Nearby were so-called “Christian” protestors. One man, Ruebn Israel, said he had come from Los Angeles to protest the “religious event.” Israel said the 25 or so men holding signs and crosses calling for repenting had gathered to “expose Islam.”

He noted that the march was advertised as one that would be attended by one million people, which turned out to be a “lie,” in his opinion. “I expect that from Muslims,” he added.

In the background was the steady sound of motorcycles from the 2 Million Bikers to D.C. group, who planned their ride in response to the Million Muslim March. A handful of bikers stopped to listen to the March Against Fear speakers.

Closer to the Capitol building, a number of bikers gathered. One woman held a sign that said “Constitution Only. No Sharia. No Submission. No Kidding.”

On the west lawn of the Capitol, a separate group called Patriots 4 America gathered, calling for President Obama to be impeached. The crowd was slightly larger than the one that gathered for the Million American March Against Fear, but just barely.

United we stand, am I right?
