WMATA is imposing a seven-day “security detour” in an area of Southeast D.C. where a passenger was struck by gunfire on Friday.
According to Metro spokesperson Sherri Ly, a passenger was riding on the W8 bus was struck by gunfire Friday night shortly after 10:30 p.m. The shooting occurred in the 2400 block of Elvans Road and the passenger was shot from outside the bus. Police say they don’t believe the victim was the intended target.
But Ly says that Friday night’s shooting was just the most serious of “several recent security incidents” leading WMATA to impose its week-long “security detail.”
In an email sent to press, ATU 689—Metro’s transit union—sent a statement with the curious subject line “Statement of Weekend Bus Hijacking,” saying that “with this incident, we are reminded of the need for an increased police presence on Metro buses.” ATU 689 spokesperson David Stephen did not elaborate on the details of the alleged Metrobus hijacking.
Ly said that Metro is unaware of any bus hijacking that occurred over the weekend and said the closest situation they could think of was on on July 28, when Metro Transit Police received reports that a bus operator was threatened at Savannah and 19th Streets SE.
