Do you want to save 20 percent or more on Metro costs? There will soon be a pass for that. Last week, Metro announced its new flexible monthly pass, but with rather vague details. Metro has since launched a website for SelectPass, giving riders more insight into how it can work for them.

The ideal user for SelectPass rides the Metro at least 4 times a week and typically spends between $2.15 and $3.75 one way, according to the site. At the beginning of each month, she’ll load her typical round-trip amount onto a SmarTrip card for 18 trips. After using the card for 18 days, the rest of that month’s trips are free.

So, for instance, if a rider’s commute is usually $2.15 one way, they’d add $77.40 for the month of April. If they take one roundtrip commute every day that month, you’ll save $51.60.

If, however, you take a trip that costs more than your standard rate (in this case $2.15), you’ll have to pay the difference.

For the best value, Metro advises purchasing next month’s pass between the 16th and the last day of the current month. While the new program begins in April, some riders are already mapping out their savings.
