Original: The Metropolitan Police Department is searching a suspect who assaulted a Muslim woman on the patio of a Starbucks in Chevy Chase. The incident took place on April 21 around 10:39 p.m. in the 5500 block of Connecticut Avenue NW, according to D.C. Police.

The victim told police that the suspect began to call her names, “and verbally abuse her due to her religion,” according to the police report. The victim said that she tried to ignore the suspect but she “would not relent.” After leaving for a moment, the suspect came back and “threw an unknown liquid-like substance” on the victim’s back and then fled the scene.

The victim is black and wears a hijab covering her head, and the suspect is a white woman with blond hair, according to the Council on American Islamic Relations, which released a statement regarding the incident. The victim told CAIR that the suspect said that she was voting for Donald Trump in hopes “that he would send ‘all of you terrorist Muslims out of this country.'”

MPD is investigating the incident as a hate crime.

The victim recounted the incident to WJLA. “I’m more nervous than ever and I’ve lived over here for six years,” she said.
