Motivate International, the company that operates Capital Bikeshare, has installed a new bike share station in Ward 7—the 400th station in the system. The 15-dock station is located at the intersection of Division Avenue and Foote Street NE, which lies just south of Deanwood near H.D. Woodson Senior High School.
In 2013, a report revealed that only 0.8 percent of bike share users who responded to a survey said they live in Ward 7, while 0.4 percent were from Ward 8. The survey, which was conducted by the George Washington University’s Master of Public Policy and Public Administration Program, reached 2,830 bikeshare members and focused on the health benefits of using the system. The report’s authors recommended that Capital Bikeshare focus on expanding to neighborhoods east of the Anacostia River, where the health effects of increased ridership could be more pronounced.
Three years later, just over 20 of the 400 stations are on that side of the city, according to a Capital Bikeshare map.
The latest station comes right before Capital Bikeshare’s 6th anniversary on September 20.
To celebrate these milestones, Capital Bikeshare is holding a scavenger hunt today for all riders. Participants can search for and claim limited-edition Capital Bikeshare CitySeat covers, one hundred of which have been placed on bikes throughout the system.
Riders who find the padded seat covers can upload a photo to social media and tag Capital Bikeshare with the hashtag #cabi400. They’ll have a chance to win one of 10 annual Capital Bikeshare membership gift certificates.
The winners will be announced by the end of today on Capital Bikeshare social media accounts.
