DCist is currently bogged down in the August doldrums. The work of democracy slows down and the workday is generally uneventful. But around 10 a.m., a spectacular multi-vehicle crash provided some excitement for DCist and other workers near Union Station.

Sources on Massachusetts Avenue, where the crash happened, say that a white box truck went into oncoming traffic as it approached North Capitol Street from the west, clipping a greenish SUV and hitting a champagne-colored Grand Marquis driven by an older couple. A cop in an unmarked maroon car had been following the white box truck, which was apparently carrying wine bottles.

WJLA/ABC-7 reported on its noon newscast that the truck was taken from L Street, but had very little other information. Nobody was hurt and the hijacker was taken into custody. It is unclear if any wine bottles were damaged.

DCist wants to ask the criminals involved why they would steal a wine truck. Did they intend to go to a pawnshop to hawk the bottles or have them for personal consumption? And why would they attempt to approach the Capitol campus? After all, white box trucks make Capitol Hill security officials very suspicious in general.

UPDATE: By 1:15 p.m., traffic was being allowed through. And DCist noticed that the white box truck belonged to Country Vitners of Richmond, Va.
