A brief report on the Krispy Kreme opening in Dupont Circle today (we are all over the story like glaze on a doughnut; we’re also about as clever as that statement would imply): A few readers wrote us this morning to alert us to the fact that the KK opening had gone less than smoothly.

From reader Ashley, who ventured over around 9:30:

There was a pretty big crowd outside the store, a TV crew, women dressed as donuts milling around. . . but there were no people enjoying donuts. If you looked inside, there were rows and rows of donuts in the cases, but no customers in the store.

My coworker asked one of the Krispy Kreme staffers outside with a camera what was going on. He said there was a problem with their occupancy permit so they could not have people enter the store…

There was talk that Mayor Williams was coming by at 10 for some sort of ceremony. It wasn’t clear if he was coming to sort out the problem and allow customers to start buying donuts.

None of the crowd was upset or mad, but we gave up and decided to try again later. As we walked back to the office we heard some cheering, so perhaps everything was worked out and customers were allowed inside.

The fabled Hot Light not working? No doughnuts being sold? We can’t stand for this sort of fascist crap, so DCist hopped on over to the store around noontime to check out the situation.
