Earlier this spring, DCist heard rumblings of a crazy thing taking place at the Galaxy Hut – a little something called iPod DJing. That’s right – no turntables or nothin’ – all you needed to spin at these events was your cigarette pack-sized iPod and the ability to create a short playlist of your favorite songs. Anyone was welcome to participate; it was spinning for the masses at its best, and the musical plebeians out there ate it up.

In August, the iPod Jukebox event made a permanent move to the Gate 54 lounge in Café Saint-Ex at 14th and T streets NW, and tonight from 9:30 p.m. to 1 a.m., the iPods will be whipped out again. The rules are easy: In order to sign up for a timeslot, show up at 8:30 (update! make that 9:30). Bring your iPod, or any other portable MP3 player (the set-up is provided, including the iPod docks and a mixer). Get ready to create the awesomest playlist ever, but make sure it runs under 12 minutes – anything longer is forbidden so that the maximum number of people can participate and everyone can be exposed to a wide range of songs.

DCist has long been obsessed with our sleek little iPod of joy, so we’ll be interested to see what kind of DJ magic takes place (though we’re too shy to reveal our own terrible playlists to the public). But if you can’t make it out tonight, worry not – iPod Jukebox will be taking place the second Wednesday of every month at Saint-Ex.
