Fall for the Book, “a cultural celebration of literature that brings together readers and writers in the Greater Washington area,” offers D.C. area book enthusiasts over 70 events and 100 featured writers this week on George Mason University’s Fairfax campus.

The festival runs through Thursday, culminating with the presentation of the Fairfax Prize to author Joyce Carol Oates at a free 8 p.m. event. In fact, most festival events are free and open to the public. Book lovers are invited to join in discussions, lectures, workshops and exhibits featuring local and national writers and professionals. Each festival day highlights a different theme, with today offering poetry, Tuesday focusing on NPR, and Wednesday showcasing children and history.

It’s ok, DCist gives you permission to venture out into the “wilds” of Fairfax County to experience the wonders of literature. We realize it IS outside the Beltway, but rumor has it that many of you actually live somewhere out there. And if you don’t, we promise that an occasional trip to the outer ‘burbs will make you a braver, more well-rounded D.C.-area resident.
