The state of Maryland announced a $668 million pledge of support for WMATA. But if you think that its a one-time gift, it’s not. The $668 million for new rail cars and buses would be over 20 years, but according to the AP, via WTOP, $329 million of that will be given in the first six years.
WMATA is currently trying to get the jurisdictions it serves to cough up enough money to meet a deadline to put in an order for 120 new rail cars. If the order does not go through, WMATA officials predict continued deterioration and gridlock across the system. We’re looking at you Orange Line commuters. Your commute is likely to worsen by 2007 if nothing is done. Assuming the 120 new rail cars come through, that rolling stock expansion would allow for eight-car trains.
