The U.S. Men’s National Soccer Team takes the field tonight in RFK stadium looking to clinch a berth in the final round of qualifying for the 2006 World Cup. The National Team has one remaining match after tonight but can assure their passage to the next round with just a single point.
“You want to get it over with,” striker Landon Donovan told ESPN. “You don’t want have to go to Barbados like we did in the first round last time and get a result. Fortunately, we have another home game if we don’t get a result, but we want it over with.”
The U.S. and Panama last played on Sept. 8 in Panama City and the U.S. needed a late goal by veteran Cobi Jones to salvage a 1-1 draw. No doubt this will be a tough test for Team USA, but they are sure to feel confident going into the match with a 9-3-3 record at RFK stadium since 1991 as well as a an 11 game unbeaten streak that has included seven wins and four draws.
