In case you haven’t heard, there’s some sort of national election a week from today and there are people getting worked up over it. Something about a polarized nation, a country in the Middle East called Iraq, global terrorism and a divided and bitter Congress, among other things …

In all seriousness though, D.C. is gearing up for next Tuesday. After a roller coaster Democratic primary, a war-turned-continuing struggle in Iraq, recession and the attacks of Sept. 11, 2001, it’s been a long four years and for anyone who deals with Congressional politics, a long two years. So much could change next week. And though DCist doesn’t typically dive into the intricacies of national politics, we’d thought we’d lend our expertise so you all are keyed into what’s going on in advance of next Tuesday’s elections and the aftermath/fallout.

So in the coming week, look for the DCist Election Night Viewer Guide, our analysis of what races you should keep an eye on. With the control of Congress at stake (Democrats say they can secure majorities in the House and Senate, Republicans say that idea is just plain loony) there will be a lot more to keep tabs on in addition to the presidential race. Also look for what to do out and about town on Election Night, which coincidentally, falls during the celebration of Dia de los Muertos.
