A chill is in the air and DCist’s thoughts turn to November sweeps. For those readers that don’t spend every waking minute of their free time reviewing and updating their DVR recording schedules, sweeps is the period when broadcast networks set their advertising rates for the next quarter based on how many eyeballs they can glue to their programs. Generally, networks pull out all the stops to attract as many viewers as possible.

DCist doesn’t mind sweeps stunts in prime time programming, because frankly, it makes for some great television viewing. TV shows exaggerate story lines for the most emotional impact and trot out celebrity guest stars hoping to get you to watch their show. For example, witness the return of Jimmy Smits as Andy’s dead partner Bobby Simone on NYPD Blue. Being manipulated by Hollywood is one thing, but the evening news in Washington these days is just as bad, if not worse. The news is supposed to inform and serve, not scare and manipulate.
