Taking a nod from Martin Luther, a group has posted on the doors of the Democratic National Committee a document they call the “November 3rd Theses,” declaring “the Democratic Party is today in the hands of people who have failed to articulate a moral-intellectual vision for America and the world, and you can’t win the confidence of the electorate without a vision.”

The 14 theses argue drastic ideological and leadership change is necessary within the Democratic Party if the party desires to be in a majority again, warning “Those who resist the process to create a new vision will be left behind.”

In a blog post on Nov. 12, the group’s leader Adam Werbach declared he would post his theses on the doors of the DNC quoting the aphorism “Insanity is continuing to do the same things over and over again and expecting different results.” Werbach is former president of the Sierra Club.

The theses reveal the influence of University of California linguist George Lakoff, whose “Moral Politics: How Liberals and Conservatives Think” has been popular in some Democratic circles. Howard Dean is a fan of Lakoff, and a quote from him graces the cover of Lakoff’s popular “Don’t Think of An Elephant.” Lakoff is involved in two organizations working to galvanize a strong progressive movement: the Breakthrough Institute, and the Rockridge Institute. This still-developing conflict within the party might explain why Howard Dean seemed briefly interested in serving as chair of the Democratic National Committee.
