The holiday season in D.C. is a time for transitions. Newly-elected legislators move to town to get oriented, and there’s plenty of office-shuffling going on about town. (DCist knows people who just got offices with a door and also newly out of work.) We’re no exception: we’ve been getting a good response to our “help wanted” sign, but it’s not too late if you want to drop us a line.

After a wave of recent announcements, the latest Bush administration official who has announced they will be leaving is Homeland Security Director Tom Ridge. The Post and others are reporting Ridge will step down soon, partly to make more money and partly for a break from the stress and long hours.

Outside of government, NAACP president Kweisi Mfume resigned today as well. (His photo is from the NAACP website) Mfume has served as president and CEO of the organization since 1996, and is credited for solving budget problems and bringing stability to the organization. According to an official statement, he retired today to “pursue new challenges in media, politics and business.” The NAACP has had testy relations with the Bush White House after an invitation to U.S. Education Secretary Rod Paige to speak at a dinner was withdrawn. The IRS has also recently announced they will be reviewing the organization’s tax-exempt status.
