In the wasteland that can be D.C.’s music scene, it’s not all that often that we have any exciting news for you. The city had a string of excellent concerts in the fall, but since then, DCist has been sitting on our proverbial couch, twiddling our proverbial thumbs and attending the few concerts that pique our interest (one of which will be the delightful Ted Leo/Washington Social Club event at the Black Cat tomorrow evening). It was looking to be a long winter.

But, lo and behold, we’ve got a scoop for our dear readers! Our good friend Tom over at Unrequited Narcissism did a little sleuthing, and discovered that the Official Hot Blogger Band of the Year, The Arcade Fire, will be playing the District sometime in late January. The exact date and venue are unknown, though Tom speculates that:

The Arcade Fire is playing Asheville, NC on Thursday the 27th and Philadelphia on the 31st. DC is in between — my guess is a Friday or Saturday night show at the Black Cat. Perhaps I’m overestimating the crowds they’re drawing and they’ll end up playing some hole in the wall on Sunday night… But the Asheville venue looks Black-Cattish in size. So I’m sticking by my prediction.

If you’ve never before heard of The Arcade Fire, we can guarantee you a fabulous show. When we went to see the Unicorns over the summer at the Black Cat, The Arcade Fire opened, and their operatic, slow-burning pop left us with mouths agape, asking, “Who was that Canadian band?” And their debut album, “Funeral”, lived up to the promise of their live show.

We’ll keep our eyes open for an official announcement and a date for ticket sales, because you can bet your iPod that this show is going to sell out. For more information on The Arcade Fire, check out Gothamist’s recent interview with them.
