If you’re looking to enjoy what is reportedly the best schnecken in D.C., you have one day left: Amernick, the bakery of acclaimed Palena pastry chef Ann Amernick, will close its doors tomorrow. According to various sources, the bakery wasn’t profitable, and has been sold to another baker.
In addition to the schnecken, Amernick was well known for its caramels, doughnuts (which may still be available at Palena) and wedding cakes. One eGullet poster laments:
Ann did our wedding cake in May and I’m still getting raves from the guests.
What am I going to do for our anniversery???? (That top layer got eaten pretty quickly … as did the second layer….) I just assumed I’d order a replica ….
Fans of Amernick’s pastries will still have a chance to sample her sweets at Palena, where she will reportedly continue to work. Ann Amernick will also be doing some special orders despite the closing of her bakery — so perhaps there is hope for the eGullet poster looking to enjoy her wedding cake again.
