So we thought that strange fish were only a phenomonon in the tidal Potomac. Now it appears that male smallmouth bass that produce eggs only thought to be found in West Virginia have now shown up upriver from Washington near Sharpsburg, Md.
The Post reports that scientists are concerned that West Virginia’s androgynous fish are spreading down river, a sign that pollution in the upper Potomac is more widespread. Some believe that the mutated fish may be affected by pollution from “sewage plants, feedlots and factories.”
Yum.
Anyone want to go fishing in West Virginia? After all it is “Wild and Wonderful” and apparently now androgynous.
