Life’s most persistent and urgent question is, what are you doing for others?
-Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
Many people are looking forward to the upcoming three-day weekend with Martin Luther King Jr. Day falling on Monday. How will you spend your Monday off?
King dedicated his energy and his life to making the world a better through service to others and a commitment to the idea that one person can make a dfference. On Monday, Americans across the country will spend their off day “on” for service to further his vision for our world. Sponsored by the Corporation for National and Community Service and the Martin Luther King, Jr. Center for Nonviolent Social Change, the Martin Luther Kng, Jr. Day of Service encourages Americans to get out and serve by offering a database of service opportunities for MLK Day. The D.C. area is pretty well represented. Are you planning Monday as a day on?
If you are busy Monday, but still looking for a way to enrich your life and our community through volunteer work, the Day of Service site offers tips for organizing a service event and potential project ideas for any day. You can also take a look at Volunteer Match, an online database of ongoing and single event volunteer opportunities around the country (just enter a ZIP code). This DCist gets a monthly newsletter from the site updating us on volunteer needs in the metro area and volunteer trends throughout the country.
