I’m getting ready to move next month. What can I do to get rid of an old bulky TV set that doesn’t work? I don’t have a car and I’m at a loss as to where to deposit it. I think I can get some friends to help me move it, but where can I trash it in D.C. without dumping it secretly on national park land? Help!
Since the television is not working, donating it isn’t an option, so dumping is the answer. Where can you dump in D.C.? According to the city’s Department of Public Works, you should haul your television to the Fort Totten Trash Transfer Station at 4900 Bates Road NE. Proof of D.C. residency is required to dump bulk trash at Fort Totten, so be sure to bring a driver’s license and perhaps a utility bill just for convenience (especially since it appears you need to bum a ride). The hours of operation are somewhat limited (1-5 p.m. Monday through Friday and 8 a.m.-3 p.m. on Saturday) so plan your trip accordingly.
You could pay to have the television removed, but really, it is probably cheaper to just rent a car and take it to Fort Totten. If, in the future you find yourself with massive bulk recycling needs, Earth 911 offers an online directory of local, regional and national recyclers to help you out.
EDIT: D’oh! DCist lacks attention to detail in research today (we are blaming the chilly temps) and missed the whole call for a bulk trash pickup section on the DC Public Works site. Thanks to the readers who pointed it out!
