Inaugural fashion gains a little more haute this inaugural go round as designers Oscar de la Renta, Badgley Mischka, Carolina Herrera, Lela Rose, Peggy Jennings and Derek Lam take on the fashion needs of America’s first women. This DCist is quite impressed with the clothing selections and is rather excited by the up-to-date fashions that the first family will be sporting — some choices quite un-conservative, but oh-so fashionable. Also, look for the appearance of Laura Bush’s waist, a feature she chose to hide in boxy designs during the ’01 Inauguration.
First, let’s look at the first lady’s fashion choices. Mrs. Bush tapped some of her favorite designers, Peggy Jennings, Carolina Herrera and Oscar de la Renta, to contribute to her inaugural wardrobe. DCist notes the obvious lack of the bold reds and blues and matronly styling typical of First Ladies. It appears Mrs. Bush does have few fashion bones in her body and is showing them all off.
During today’s opening ceremonies Mrs. Bush donned a light green day suit with a jacket that neatly nips the waist into a curvy silhouette, and at tonight’s candlelight dinner she showcases another Peggy Jennings’ creation, a crystal rose, hand beaded, re-embroidered gown over pink silk satin. The evening’s Texas State Black Tie and Boots Ball will see the Mrs. Bush in a creative Carolina Herrera western-inspired ensemble, a raspberry awning-striped taffeta, full-skirted shirt dress. DCist is quite interested in seeing this dress in real life (or real life pictures), the drawing looks lighthearted and Herrera is known for her elegant styles.
