And you thought he was washed up when he walked out of the White House four years ago. But no, former D.C. resident and President William Jefferson Clinton has done us proud, being appointed as special UN envoy for tsunami reconstruction efforts in southern Asia. This appointment piggybacks upon current President Bush’s bipartisan appointment of Clinton and Bush’s father, former President George H.W. Bush, to foster private support for the aid and reconstruction efforts on behalf of the United States.
Clinton said he would continue to focus on his work with Bush “to urge people to contribute to this cause, and the two of us hope to visit the region together later this month.”
Fred Eckhard, a spokesman for the United Nations, said Annan wanted to appoint a special envoy not only to focus on the cleanup and reconstruction but also to make progress on resolving conflicts with rebels in the two worst-hit countries — Indonesia and Sri Lanka, Eckhard said.
Really, isn’t this progression at its best. State, national and now international positions. With foreign relations and mediation a strong point in his resume, it is no wonder that Clinton was selected for the position. Hillary was either so excited for the international nod or so fearful that hubbie would overshadow her potential bid for the White House that she was feeling a little faint. (Sorry Hillary! We really hope you feel better! You have to understand our need for marginal wit. **hugs**)
