It all began as a dream. We would descend on the National Gallery, where internationally famous sculptor and artist Andy Goldsworthy was constructing a custom exhibit for D.C. We’d photograph the construction in exquisite detail, catch Andy in the food court for a revealing interview, and wrap up the evening sharing a pint with his English crew. However, with the completion of the project fast approaching it appears as if we won’t be able to realize our fantasy. However, if blogs are good at anything, it’s vicarious experience. Local blogger listen missy took a trip down to the National Gallery and snapped some interesting photographs (including the one above) which we highly recommend.
Just who is this Goldsworthy character, and what is he up to? Goldsworthy’s art defies categorization — it has involved photographing natural scenes decorated with chains of colored leaves, creating ephemeral ice and wood sculptures, and even hiring dozens of Britons to complete a massive project which recycled abandoned stoneworks into a 21st century sculpture. Whatever you call it, his works are frequently fascinating and have earned him international acclaim. (You might have caught Rivers and Tides, a 2003 documentary film about the artist and his works.)
