Popular Adams Morgan coffee shop/bar Tryst is planning to turn off their free WiFi at 8:30 p.m. on Friday and Saturday nights. We noticed the news on local blog prod & ponder, who thought it was “really disturbing” and even called to double check.

“That makes perfect sense,” said one former server at Tryst we know. “I wouldn’t bring a laptop to Adam’s Morgan on a Friday or Saturday. They don’t want people to sit there forever … as long as every other time it’s still free, everything’s all good.” Meanwhile, in a city filled with people toting BlackBerry devices and a Starbucks with pay Internet on every corner, the elusive free hotspots seem in scarce supply. There’s Murky Coffee in Eastern Market and Arlington, Sparky’s Espresso Cafe on 14th Street, and the Open Mall group trying to get free WiFi on the Mall, although we don’t know anyone who has used their service. What’s your favorite free WiFi hotspot? DCFUD has a very good list of WiFi hotspots around the city, which was mentioned recently in the Express.

Also in Adams Morgan, the Post is reporting that the Harris Teeter supermarket chain is planning to open at 39,000-square-foot store at the corner of 17th Street and Kalorama Road NW, which will “reflect the neighborhood’s growing affluence, with a wine consultant, coffee bar and sushi station.”
