In an article that reminds us a little bit of USA Today’s recent shocking discovery that iPods are popular, a Post front-page article today delves into the underbelly of Saint-Ex’s regular iPod DJ Night.
We kid, we kid. We’re glad the iPod DJ nights got some good press — we’re totally a fan of the monthly events, and couldn’t be more pleased that local bloggers Seeking Irony and WeirdCurves got quoted. But at the same time, the article highlights the interest that many mainstream media giants seem to have in talking about hip trends that have existed for a while (the article includes patient explanations of mash-ups, podcasting, and what greyhound drinks are made of). We just keep imagining our grandparents, devoted Post readers, taking a look at this article and either being utterly befuddled or feeling pleased that they’ve just been given a secret glimpse into the seedy underworld of D.C. hipsters. And that makes us feel funny on the inside.
But the only thing that really bothers us: the Manhattanite jerk quoted near the end of the article.
Still, there’s always someone like Paul Straka who sneers upon hearing “Pieces of Me,” not Ashlee Simpson’s, but the cut from the local go-go band Rare Essence.
“Listen to this awful, awful music,” says the 28-year-old computer programmer from Manhattan who’s in town visiting friends. Just because it’s iPod night doesn’t mean the music is going to be any good, he says.
We say to Mr. Paul Straka: Go back to NYC, and take that attitude with you!
