Hourly Car Rental Increasing: The Post profiles today the expanding popularity of the two major hourly car rental services in the region: Flexcar and Zipcar. The D.C. area is unique because it’s the only place both companies have gone head-to-head: “After three-plus years, the companies have stationed a combined 226 cars in the area and have signed up more than 14,000 members, nearly half of them in the past year.”

Virginians Gaining Weight, Quickly: A federal study has found the rate of obesity in Virginia is increasingly more rapidly than any other state in the nation. Governor Mark Warner has kicked off a heath program with a series of public meetings to tackle the problem, which state officials say is caused mainly by poor diet and inactivity. Virginia may be gaining, but it’s not the fattest: West Virginia, Texas, and Mississippi claim that title.

Cell Phone Law Enforced: WTOP reports that in the first eight months of being D.C. law, the ban on driving and using a cell phone without a hands free device has resulted in 3,532 tickets. Not all those tickets are being paid: 75 percent of those who appeal get the ticket reversed after purchasing a hands free device.
