It is generally known that WMATA shuts down metrorail at 3 a.m. on the weekends. But in reality, that is a very flexible closing time. With the last trains of the night leaving certain terminal stations to head to the other end of the line, some service ends before 3 a.m., others end well after 3 a.m. So what happens when you find yourself underground and the system shuts down?
You may have heard stories from friends heading home on the last train to Virginia on a Saturday night who have passed out or fallen asleep, only to find themselves at Franconia-Springfield and sore out of luck. And we’ve met someone who somehow found himself at the Pentagon metrorail station well after the system closed only to be greeted by less-than-pleased, and armed, military police when he tried to leave the station for the surface.
And then there’s what happened to 10 equally unlucky and lucky Orange Line passengers this past weekend, early Sunday morning.
