Any suggestions for good vegetarian eateries in the DC metro area?

Well, D.C. isn’t really “known” for its huge all-vegetarian selection, but the last few years have brought a variety of vegetarian eateries to the area, and more importantly a little diversity in vegetarian selections on menus. DCist must point you in the direction of VegDC.com, an online directory of all that is vegetarian in D.C. They provide a comprehensive listing of vegetarian fare at restaurants in the metro area, as well as grocers and caterers.

For a more personal touch to our recommendations and places of interest, DCist made an informal poll of our friends and colleagues and this is what we hear.

    — We haven’t been there, but are intrigued by the Soul Vegetarian Caterers and Restaurant in Largo, Md., and on Georgia Ave. in D.C.
Food for Thought at the Black Cat. – “This places makes the
    best french fries/chili/nachos around.”
    — Teaism serves up “really good naan bread. If you want a small but hefty snack, try the naan bread with any of their teas.”
    — Two people sounded off that Asylum in Adams Morgan has a good veggie menu, particularly the brunch was mentioned.
    — If you are in the Capitol Hill area for lunch, check out Wellness Cafe. Their brown rice is supposed to be delish.
    — Harmony Cafe in Georgetown (3287 1/2 M St. NW) is a good choice for Chinese food with “plenty of mock meat dishes that are very satisfying. Big portions, friendly service and a favorite of the indie rock vegans everywhere.”
    — South Indian restaurants in Langley Park are a good bet. “Udupi Palace is by far the best, but Woodland is also good.”
    — If you need a fancier restaurant, or desire a trendy D.C. establishment, check out Zaytinya, which offers a good-sized vegetarian menu and is one of D.C.’s hottest restaurants at the moment (Small plates are in right now … and who can argue with Mediterranean small plates?)

DCist was also reminded that most Indian and Ethiopian restaurants sport a large vegetarian selection.

So D.C., where do you get your waiter-served vegetarian meals?
