In January a reader wrote to us asking how they could dispose of a large broken TV. We suggested hauling it to the dump at Fort Totten or scheduling a bulk pickup with the D.C. Department of Public Works. Another reader suggested the D.C. Freecycle e-mail list, which we hear has some good stuff for the taking if you’re quick on the “reply” button.

We recently learned there was a better option available to get rid of your TV, or any old electronics — two official city “e-cycling” events this spring on April 23 and May 14 where city residents can drop off “televisions, audio-video equipment, cell phones, home office equipment, computers, computer parts and computer components” for recycling. (All screens must be intact.) The city says e-cycling is a good way to keep arsenic, lead, mercury and other dangerous chemicals in your electronics out of land fills and our water. With the drop-off point in Rock Creek Park at Carter Barron off 16th Street NW, we also see no reason a little recycling couldn’t be combined with a spring outing to enjoy the warming weather.
