Tomorrow is the dreaded day on which tax returns are due. But for District residents filing at the last minute, the grudging march to the post office is coupled with the indignity of knowing that the 600,000 some-odd residents do not enjoy full Congressional representation.
Tomorrow the local pro-democracy activists at DC Vote will highlight the fact that District residents pay taxes ($14.6 billion in 2003) and serve in the armed forces (they have fought in every war since the War of 1812, when parts of the capital were torched by the British) yet benefit from no voting representative in either house of Congress. (Del. Eleanor Holmes Norton can vote in committee but not in the full House.) The activists will be handing out stickers from 8 a.m to 9:30 a.m at the Eastern Market, Union Station, and Capitol South metrorail stations and from noon to 1:30 p.m. in front of the National Capital Post Office at North Capitol Street and Massachusetts Avenue.
