(Introducing new DCist contributor Colleen Egan, who will focus on the local shopping scene.)

Satiate your desire for all things melted with the world’s largest fondue at this weekend’s Washington National Cathedral Flower Mart. Still reeling from a recent visit to the Melting Pot? Then get your share of Swiss culture (this year’s event salutes Switzerland) by viewing Swiss cinema or milking a cow, though DCist was told that a real cow will not be used. Hmm…we plan to check out Swiss-style hip hop with a performance by “i-d-8 a.k.a Indiscriminate Dance Troupe.”

Contrary to its name, Flower Mart also features dozens of local vendors selling items popular with the popped-collar crowd, such as quilted Vera Bradley totes from All That Glitters and ribbon-trimmed denim jackets from Liza Byrd. You can even find a country-club appropriate ribbon leash for your dog from Four Preppy Paws (found at Doggie Style in D.C.). Ladies with more eclectic tastes can check out Cyndy Esty’s funky, cigar-box style purses or vintage jeweled bags from A Pocket Full of Posies. Of course, the event also will feature plants of the annual and perennial variety for the more horticulturally inclined, though DCist will stick to relatively care-free bamboo.

Shopping in the shadow of the cathedral should diminish the threat of buyer’s remorse, along with the fact that admission to Flower Mart is free and proceeds benefit the grounds and gardens of the cathedral. Now that’s divine shopping inspiration. Flower Mart started this morning (open ’til 6 p.m.) and continues Saturday, 10 a.m.-5 p.m.
