Where can I find some used and vintage clothes in D.C.? My friends in New York City always have some great finds and I’d love to grab some of my own without having to go up to New York.

Actually, DCist contributor Colleen Egan, who specializes in all things shopping, has been pulling together a piece on vintage and consignment shops (what can we say, we are unique clothing junkies and want to spread the love). So Ask DCist now turns you over to her able hands. Besides, we’ve become inspired by these suggestions and have no time to write…we have to go shopping now!

To the outsider, D.C. might seem like a fashion monarchy, ruled by the pinstriped and high-heeled likes of Brooks Brothers and Ann Taylor. But behind that business professional facade is a wealth of vintage and consignment shops.

What’s the difference, you ask? Vintage refers to clothing and accessories from bygone eras (from Grandma’s pearls to Mom’s mini dresses), while consignment clothing generally consists of more recent styles in good condition. Also, clothing owners sell their apparel through consignment shops, which keep a percentage of the sale.

Below are some D.C. vintage and consignment stores to check out.
