It’s finally opening. The long-awaited Giant supermarket on Park Road in Columbia Heights is welcoming in the neighborhood. It’s been getting good marks for its initial debut.

From Olivia Leigh, who posted the photo at right in DCist Photos:

It’s honestly the most amazing grocery store I’ve been in, and a very welcome addition to the neighborhood, since the previous one had a terrible selection. I walked in and was just absolutely stunned, and said, “What the hell am I supposed to do here?” There were like, 50 choices of breads, catci and aloe vera, and coconut shrimp.

But there are, of course, the reluctant detractors too. Leigh says this is also a sad introduction for those who already lived in the neighborhood: “[I] can’t help but think that this new grocery store is emblematic (and the real catalyst) for their demise.”

And then there’s the controversy over the sidewalk outside the store, according to the Columbia Heights neighborhood blog.
