Ah, the halcyon days of summer in the District.

It’s disgusting out there. The air is as thick and soggy as a piece of french toast made by a six-year-old, but nowhere near as delicious. Animal instinct tells us to head directly for the nearest cool, dark cave and commence with the removal of clothing. But we are not animals. We are civilized urban aesthetes. We shall head to the cinema. We shall bathe in the glory that is central air.

>>In case you hadn’t heard, The D.C. Indepedent Film Festival Summer Series since Thursday has been offering up a delightful blend of classic indie fare, a program made up entirely of films by young, local directors, and a selection of DCIFF favorites from the last couple of years. Budding filmmakers take note: the festival has also organized a bunch of “Open Screen” time where anyone over the age of 16 can bring in a short reel and get peer feedback. Check out the schedule; tickets to screenings will run you $6. Through July 21.

>>Slamming George Lucas has become something of an artform since the release of more recent “Star Wars” installments, but once upon a time, pre-CGI, he actually made entertaining films. The AFI Silver Theatre is screening The Indiana Jones Trilogy and “American Graffiti” all week. Of course, Lucas only produced the Spielberg-directed Indiana Jones movies, but we’re getting the chance to see that giant boulder race toward us on the big screen, so who are we to complain?

What films have you been wanting to see this week? And which D.C. theaters have the best AC action?
