Yes, it’s Friday. And yes, this column is most often featured on Tuesdays or Thursdays. What can we say? It’s been a slow week in transit-related news. Our numerous sources scouring the city for scoops on planes, trains, and automobiles were held up in the perfect storm of Red Line delays, heavy traffic, and 15-minute waits at distant metrorail stations. Trust us — the folks over at WMATA will be hearing about this.
The picture above, though only marginally related to traffic issues, exemplifies the creative civic nature of many District drivers. Instead of calling to report a broken meter, which would allow the city to fix it and start charging for parking again, many among us simply hope a pen, piece of paper, and scribble will be enough to get us out of a spending a few quarters or receiving a ticket. Sadly, it doesn’t work nearly as often as we’d hope. And the District is on to us — new, electronic meters that print out receipts that must be displayed in one’s windshield have been popping up in Georgetown as of late. Those things are near indestructible. Props to epmd, who posted the picture to Flickr.
