D.C. Mayor Anthony Williams isn’t one to be left behind — he’s started his own official blog. Currently boasting only one entry dated August 15, Williams admits he’s not trying to undermine his communications staff more than connect with the citizens he serves. He writes:

As I welcome you to my blog I’m asking myself the question: What is a blog anyway? Is it a modern high-tech version of the diary logging the experiences and observations of a local public official? Is it an almanac capturing my far flung and scattered interests in fields ranging from ornithology to baseball? Is it a disciplined effort to share with you a well-written piece on a daily theme? (Psst…Don’t take this as an example.) Or is it just a steady stream of consciousness floating by without even primary treatment[?]

And in keeping with the spirit of online community, he even allows comments and questions, albeit ones that are screened by members of his staff. Well, I suppose that will preclude us from asking whether or not he plans on running for a third term…

There is little doubt that blogging is all the rage these days — so much so that Bacon’s Information, a Chicago-based media strategy and public relations firm, has produced a white paper on the value of blogs to communication professionals. We know we’re on to something when corporations collectively start jumping on the bandwagon.

Anyhow, welcome to the blogosphere, Mayor Williams!
