Workers in Bethesda have a new space to spend their lunch breaks, and those that live in the area have a new place to unwind. Union Jack’s British Pub opens this evening after a largely successful private party last night. While those hoping for an authentic English pub experience may be disappointed, those looking for a good time will find everything they need. The non-smoking establishment is plenty large, boasting three major areas, each with its own feel. The partially enclosed patio hosts a large projection screen (for featured games), couches, and a mahogany bar; the dining room, above, is ample; and in the back six pool tables with fresh green felt provide patrons with another way to blow off steam.
The majority of the menu space is filled with standard bar food, but traditional British fare makes its mark as well. Welsh rarebit, fish and chips, and bangers and mash are but a few of the standard staples that can be paired with a good beer — of which there is variety of on tap.
The bottom line? Union Jack’s provides a large open space to watch football with your friends on Sunday, shake your groove-thing on a Friday night, or have a beer and a meal on your way home after work. Considering the competition in the area, DCist thinks this “British Pub” will be a welcomed and successful addition to the downtown Bethesda area. Happy hour is from 5-8 this evening, so if you’re close by be sure to check it out.
