OK, maybe not just the Jews. There probably will be a few gentiles there. In any case, Loveline co-host Dr. Drew Pinsky will be here tomorrow at 7 p.m. to talk about his new book Cracked: Putting Broken Lives Together Again. DCist likes the addiction specialist as much as the next guy, but what is really appealing about the event is its location, the Sixth and I Historic Synagogue. By the way, it’s at the corner of 6th and I Streets, NW.

Why is the location so amazing? Well, if you’re like this DCist, you grew up attending services in a 1960s or 70s blechy suburban synagogue with orange carpeting on the walls. Not very spiritually inspiring.

Sixth and I is a whole different story. Dedicated in 1908, the building was used as a synagogue until its congregation needed bigger digs in the 1940s. At that point, Turner Memorial A.M.E. Church acquired the building and used it until it needed a larger holy house of its own in 2002. See a pattern here? A team of wealthy Jews snapped into action and had the synagogue/church renovated to its original Moorish, Romanesque and Byzantine splendor, replete with awe-inspiring stained glass and a domed ceiling reminiscent of a Faberge egg, according to the artist who painted it.

But the event is about Dr. Drew, who has been laying knowledge on the ignorant for years with his straight talk about sex and drugs. Tickets are still available for $12. And if you go and are bored by the good doctor, you can look up at the ceiling and think about eggs.

Stay tuned for Sixth and I’s next big event in October, A Hip Hop Hasid: Matisyahu in Concert.
