Meters Could Be Coming to D.C. Cabs: An experimental study of using meters in D.C. taxi cabs we reported on almost a year ago is finally under way, as the first experimental meters placed in 20 of the District’s 6,500 cabs have appeared, the AP reports via WTOP. The research team from a group of local universities plan to release their study next summer. The mayor’s ambitions to re-organize the Taxicab Commission caused drivers to stage a one-day strike last year. In other news, we recently had a female taxicab driver who proudly told us she was one of only two registered female drivers in the District. Have you had a female driver?

Although the Post reports that the IRS doesn’t usually launch full-fledged investigations of cases where people have failed to pay — a misdemeanor — they do target elected officials in particular.

Sick Giraffe at the National Zoo: A giraffe at the National Zoo’s will undergo surgery to remove a lemon-sized cancerous tumor from its head, WTOP is reporting. Veterinarians plan on carefully stabilizing the neck while the animal is sedated, apparently a tricky part of working with giraffes.
